Bogazici University Center for Life Sciences and Technologies (LifeSci)
The Life Sciences and Technologies Research and Development Center of Bogaziçi University (LifeSci) was founded in Turkey for the purpose of creating a national platform for interdisciplinary research and technology applications, establishing national and international collaborations, and conducting joint research and training activities. The center has 66 lecturers from 13 academic units (Molecular Biology and Genetics, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Electrical-Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Psychology, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Sciences, English Teaching, Western Languages and Literature). The basic units of the center are:
Microsystem Based Medical Device Development Unit: Enables the completion of all processes required for development of prototypes of medical devices that enter or are implanted into the body. The unit which comprises a group of clean groups of classes ISO 5, ISO 6, and ISO 7, provides services to researchers in many areas such as surface coating with lithographic methods; laser cutting of metal tube or plate; carbon dioxide laser branding; micro coil winding; production of interbody carriage systems; production of fast 3D prototypes. The medical compatibility of the output creates is taken into consideration in all procedures.
The unit particularly focuses on the design and development of innovative medical units containing MEMS based sensors, that will be used for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, and on producing prototypes that are suitable for clinical use. Projects regarding cardiovascular prostheses and the development of their carriage systems are conducted within the unit. The unit’s 13485 certification process is ongoing.
Test Analysis Unit: It is a unit that was established with the analysis needs of biomedical and biotechnology industries in mind, serving both the academy and industry. It works on a wide range extending from chromatographic analyses such as impurity and metabolite analyses to microscopic and rheological tests. The unit’s active research subjects are: CHNS Elemental Analyzer, Contact Angle Measurement System, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Ellipsometer, Fluorescence Microscope, Fluorescence Spectrophotometer, FTIR, Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS), Matrix Assisted Laser DesorpsionIonization (Maldi-tof), Micro Balance, pH meter, Preparative High Performance Liquid Chromatography (Prep-HPLC), Prep-MPLC, Preparative High Performance Liquid Chromatography (Prep-HPLC), Prep-MPLC, Scanning Electron Microscope, Spin Coater, UV-Lamp, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Zeta Potential (ZetaSizer), Cell Lab (Biosafety cabinet, CO2 incubator, Cell Counter and Analyzer, Inverted microscope, Microplate Reader, Refrigerated Centrifuge, Vortex mixer…)
Experimental Production and Care Unit of Animals (Vivarium): Authorized by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, the Unit performs production and care of mice, rats, rabbits, quails, zebra danio, and vinergar flies. The unit can perform small medical interventions, biochemical inspections and surgical operations upon demand of project owners, as well as routine diagnostics and treatment services. Activities are performed for raising trans-bred mice that have irritable immune systems, and tumor studies. Additionally, the infrastructure for pharmacokinetic studies have been established, and these studies are to be commissioned soon. The unit also has a RESEARCH LICENSE that will allow performing Transgenic Animal Studies.
